There’s something completely lifegiving about hardcore punk. The energy, the opposition, the hidden melodies of uprising. It’s the music of choice when everything becomes simply to dark and convoluted and all I want to do is give up and give in.
And Wolfbrigade, the long-running Swedish hardcore stalwarts are an excellent choice in such situations. Their take on the genre incorporates both a certain amount of melody, as well as touches of both thrash/death metal and more Motörhead-like rock’n’roll (a band that seems to have influenced both logo and album-covers to a certain extent).
But underneath such stylistic choices, of course, still beats (d-beats, even :-) ) the true heart of punk – the empathy with the downtrodden and the utter disregard and contempt for the high, mighty and power-hungry.
Which all brings about this energizing combination of rage and downright body-moving, mosh-inducing pit-unity that so often makes going to a punk-show so invigorating (bruises and all).
And, to release an album as fresh and direct as Run With The Hunted, 20-odd years into a punk-rock “career” bodes well for a special experience when your tired body will be trying to keep up with Wolfbrigade on Sunday 22nd April at Het Patronaat.
