The Body and Thou’s 2 collaborative releases (an EP from 2014 and an album from 2015) promises a performance with hectic maelstroms of noisey and harsh sound washing over an audience that (hopefully) will understand to internalize everything, letting the music cleanse through them like fire, with these dark nihilistic compositions where nothing that even resembles light are allowed to escape. And as such feels particularly in-tune with the rather dark tone that rests over quite a few of this year’s performing artists.

The Body

The Body – without a doubt one of the most interesting entities operating in the minefield of metal and/or metal-like surroundings.

Fiercely heavy, fiercely brutal, and fiercely experimental to boot, they are masters of both extreme musical oppression – and it’s opposite, a kind of aesthetical reverence, which might still be fraught with dischord and dissonance, but seems pleasing nonetheless. And in essence, it’s in the places where the two distinctly different approaches meet, that the greatest epiphanies from listening to the music of The Body come.

In addition, The Body are avid collaborators, and it is exactly in these collaborations the perhaps greatest, most interesting aspect of this project comes into fruition – where The Body and their way of doing things are allowed to clash with differing musical approaches and mindsets.

First and foremost, Thou are among the heaviest, crushiest of all the black-infused sludgers – but they contain so much more, and both the soothing, semi-acoustic passages, the post-metal, the sinister drones delivers counter-weight as well as an under-current supporting the general emotional picture.

Seeming totally at ease with their many different modes of expression, it is not surprising that Thou can be counted among the great cover-artists too, with especially their devastating Black Sabbath covers and their profound renditions of Nirvana classics stand out.

Add to that inspired, narrative lyrics and you would have a truly great band… and you do…

“We have paved the roads that have led to our own oppression. Fear of the unknown, of rejection, has put brutes and villains in power. The fetters that restrict our arms and throats were cast by our own hands, just as we have set our own guards at the door. We drag boulders a thousand leagues to erect their palaces. We have established a system of education that celebrates sacrifice and creates generations of slaves. Hold hands in a ritual of deception. Hold hands in a ritual of desolation. Hold hands in a ritual of self destruction. We are the accomplice class: footstools for our masters, spineless bastards all.”
